Bandsome Haboon - Self-Portrait

About

I am a music production hobbyist, typically in electronica genres. Occasionally, I record my workflow and production attempts and publish them on Youtube.

MUSIC

Consultations

After decades of quietly noodling, I have finally uploaded/released a piece I've called "Consultations".

It started as a semi-generative VCV Rack experiment and grew into an ambient electronic piece.

I am also one part of Stadiophobia, an electronic music group. What started out as an experimental project has become an ongoing collaboration.

It's mostly an excuse to nerd out together over music production and sound design, but occasionally we release our work.

STUDIO

My journey began with Propellerhead Software's (now Reason Studios) Reason in 2000, just playing around with ReDrum, Subtractor, and the NN-19 Sampler, happily making noises and short loops.

(I can't believe it's been nearly twenty-five years...)

I built my studio around Steinberg's Cubase SX3, but having no idea what I was doing, I struggled with the classic sequencing/arranging workflow and found myself uninspired any time I sat in front of the computer. I discovered Ableton Live around 2005, which unlocked a mental door, and I've been a Live user ever since.

Over the years, I've collected software synths and effects, including software from Native Instruments, Arturia, and IK Multimedia. Though my VST library grew, I experienced the common (misguided) feeling that something was still missing. I had all these tools, but I still wasn't making music - how can that be?

Years went by and I essentially gave up on the idea of producing music. I kept the tools, I'd open them every now and then, but never completed anything and honestly, never tried hard at it. And then around 2020, I came across VCV Rack. Something clicked into place. The studio felt complete. Music noodling was fun again.

Today, I'm back to making noises and short loops, and I'm enjoying the hell out of it. Sometimes, the loops grow into longer arrangements, but I'm not so concerned with having to write songs. I'm just enjoying the loop.
